GREGORY ROGOVE

Piana, featuring John Medeski and special guests, out today on Knitting Factory Records

Multi-media release includes bonus DVD with videos and remixes by Adam Green, Fab Moretti, Devendra Banhart, Violens and more

Gregory Rogove, known for his work with Devendra Banhart, Priestbird and Megapuss, releases his first album of solo piana compositions today. Piana is a collection of simple, melancholic yet beautiful instrumental pieces for piano that were inspired by the French Impressionist piano music of Erik Satie and Claude Debussy (or, in other words, sad, instrumental pop songs).  The compositions were conceived and written in Mexico by Rogove; they were performed by Rogove and John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin, & Wood) and recorded in Woodstock, NY.

Piana consists of a CD of solo piano songs as well as a bonus DVD which includes remixes, or re-interpretations of each tracks. You can get an idea of the concept at this link which features the solo piano track “Jackyl,”  the “remix”/reinterpretation by Violens, and a stop-motion video set to the solo piano piece.

The bonus DVD is like a virtual “gallery” - you can click on images hanging in this virtual gallery and jukebox and view or listen to “remixes” of the solo piano compositions as interpreted by both musicians and visual artists.  This disc includes remix tracks by Devendra Banhart, Violens, Lucky Dragons, The Bees, BIlly Martin (MMW) and more.  The visual re-interpretations include photography by Lauren Dukoff, a collage by Fabrizio Moretti (the Strokes) and videos by Steve and George Gorrow and Greg and Diana Garcia

Upcoming performances:

2.09.12 Los Angeles, CA @ Bullett/Dillitante Records w/Emily Kokal (Warpaint), The Moor

2.19.12 Los Angeles, CA @ Hemingways Lounge, w/Big Sir, Eureka the Butcher + Sarah Luna

Gregory Rogove premieres “Piana” at Electric Lady Studios in NYC

Gregory Rogove premiered music and art from his 2012 2-disc, multi-media release Piana this week at the legendary Electric Lady Studios this Wednesday, November 9. Adam Green stopped by to share his diary (shared over his Piana track ”remix”) and Storms performed. Tequila and Fresca was the drink of choice, filmakers, media, artists and musicians dropped by and - as an Electric Lady employee said - “Jimi would have dug this.”

Known for his work with Devendra Banhart, Priestbird (Tarantula A.D.) and as being a third of Megapuss (with Devendra and Fab Moretti of the Strokes), Gregory is a multi-instrumentalist and this is his first album of piano compositions.  Greg enlisted John Medeski (Medeski, Martin and Wood) to perform the tracks live in the studio but performed three tracks live at Electric Lady.

Gregory Rogove to release “Piana” - CD/DVD release of solo piano compositions performed by John Medeski With remixes by Devendra Banhart, Adam Green, Violens and others, NYC and LA events announced

New York, NY, November 3, 2011: With the release of Piana, multi-instrumentalist Gregory Rogove, known for his work in Priestbird, Megapuss and Devendra Banhart and The Grogs, has delivered an evocative collection of solo piano compositions in the vein of Erik Satie, accompanied by a DVD of “interpretations” of his work by various artist and musician friends. Greg enlisted John Medeski (Medeski Martin and Wood), to perform these songs, which they recorded in one day in Woodstock, NY. A stunning release - both visually and aurally, Piana will be released on January 31st, 2012 on Knitting Factory Records.

Piana’s bonus DVD opens to a virtual “gallery,” where you can click on images on the wall to select remix tracks by Devendra Banhart, Violens, Lucky Dragons, The Bees, Billy Martin (MMW) and many more.  In addition, you can view visual re-interpretations, such as photography from Lauren Dukoff, a collage by Fabrizio Moretti (the Strokes) and video by Steve and George Gorrow, and more. The first video for the release, “Jackyl” is premiering today on NPR’s All Thing Considered “First Watch” HERE.

Says Rogove:  ”I have a fondness for the minimalist piano works of Erik Satie and the Preludes of Claude Debussy. I admire their sense of space, simplicity, color, melody, and painterly harmony.  However, more than receiving technical inspiration to try in vain what those great masters have done, their music instead inspired me to audition a few of the myriad characters the piano so adroitly portrays. More than considering my tunes minimalist, impressionist, or classically inspired, to me they sound like melancholic but hopeful, somewhat Jewish, instrumental pop songs.”

Rogove will be presenting two special multimedia events to premiere the release: he’ll be at Electric Lady Studio in NYC on November 9 and Human Resources Gallery in LA on November 16. Scroll down for details and to RSVP. These shows will feature Greg playing a couple of the original pieces on piano, with an assortment of the remix artists performing their reinterpretations of the pieces. The multi-media events will also feature the visual pieces from the DVD — drawings, photographs, designs, collages, sculptures and videos, which will be hung or projected in the space.

Piana is a fall and winter release, a collection that’s rewarding to dig into when you have time to spend, Or as an album to listen to on a blustery day indoors. Rogove’s compositions are spare and beautifully understated, imbued with a sense of history and longing and performed with sensitivity and nuance by John Medeski. They could have been written over one 100 years ago or yesterday; they are timeless.

With the Piana CD/DVD, Rogove has created a virtual gallery and recital hall and invited his artistic friends to drop by. Please give it a visit!
